Robyn Gant
Robyn Gant is the playwright of 'The Shepherds and the Angels' and author of the critically acclaimed novel 'In Laws and Play Cousins.'
She grew up in Southern California and studied at Grambling State University, where she majored in Music and Business Management and marched and performed in Grambling's Marching Band, Concert Band and Jazz Band. She also studied at California Southern University where she majored in Human Resources Management and later studied law at California Southern School of Law in Riverside, California.
In 1985 she entered a song-writing contest and won second place in that year's Budweiser Showdown for her original song titled 'Summer.' This neo-soul tune performed by her all female band 'Lipstik' opened the door for a musical tour across the country that provided opportunities for collaborations with other artists, including many concert platforms, dance and other theatrical performances. She is an accomplished and classically trained Flautist, plays piano and was the Musical/Choir Director for Holy Missionary Baptist Church in Pomona, CA for five years. As a writer, she was first published in 2002 in a book project spearheaded by Joni Cole and others titled, "This Day, Diaries of American Women," in which women from all walks of life across America chronicled their entire day.
She is an author of five novels: The award winning ‘In Laws and Play Cousins, ’Three Sides to Every Story,’ (the sequel to ‘In-Laws and Play Cousins)' Masumi Records,’ ’Masquerade Dot Com,’ 'The Notes in Her Grandmother's Library.'
In 2011 she was named one of the Top Ten Best New Authors of 2011 by the National Black Book Fair. Also in 2011 her short story, ‘Dishonorable Thieves’ won an Honorable Mention from the Palm Springs Writers Guild during their annual short story contest. She loves sewing and designing original costumes and most recently worked as the Costume Designer for WOW's theatrical productions 'Flying West,' and the 2023 production of 'Dunbar.' She also enjoys sailing, chilling on the beach, skiing and stargazing. She lives and writes in the Hawaiian Islands. She will be making her directorial debut with "The Shepherds and the Angels."
